Once again the book starts with the last chapter of part 2. In Part 3 of the Synchronicity War, we find the humans on their hidden planet, only 11,000 of them left.
And they die.
However their contact with the other aliens, the Friendlies, has given them a time machine that is used by AIs to go back and change the past. This book started to get a little crazy for me, as timelines are followed to disaster, and then someone goes back and changes things.
I'm not sure I love the idea of time travel over and over again to change the story, but that's the premise. It was interesting enough to keep me going.
