A Win

The Rocky Select 14 Select team I coach managed to turn things around at the Colorado Crossroads qualifier. After a rough first day (0-3), they came back as fighters. This despite the fact that our first day meant we were in the bottom half of the bracket.

They worked hard day 2, with 4 matches in a row and only a 30 minute break. They eked out a 3-1 record, but tied with two other teams and lost the tiebreakers on points. They’re still young, and it’s hard to stress to them that giving up points can come back to haunt you. We ended up going 2-0 on the third day, against not very good competition, and ended the weekend at 97th. We still had a few smiles.

This past weekend was our next regional tournament. We’d dropped to Division 4 after a rough last outing and we were worried. They’d forgotten about Crossroads two weeks ago and practices haven’t been very focused.

They worked hard, beating the first team easily, but then struggling a bit against a boy’s 13 yr old team. We were better, but somehow let them get ahead of us. We managed to easily win the third set, and then worked hard to beat another team in 3. Again, we should have won easier, and did win going away in the third, but it was a struggle. More than it should have been.

I was worried about the crossover match. The two #1 teams play and 1 of them moves up to Division3. Sometimes 2, but we don’t count on that. I worried we’d had an up and down day, and might not finish strong, with our next outing in Philly in two weeks.

The girls played well, and the other team wasn’t very good. Not sure how they were #1, but we won easily, 25-14. Closer than it should have been, but not really close.

We won again, and the girls were happy. Many of them from last year’s team, where they’d only won once. This is our second tournament win and hopefully we can get one more in Division. 3.

Now for more training before another national qualifier in Philadelphia.

Too Quiet

Tia and Kendall left for Boston last night, off to visit colleges. I wish I would go, but I’m a bit buried at work. Too much time off lately and behind, plus practice with my volleyball team has me here.

Today was weird. Tia is gone lots of days, but not all day. Today I was home, by myself, and it was odd. That hasn’t happened in a long time. Usually kids are here at some point. Instead, me, the dogs and the cats hung out. They were good and I got them out a few times, but I think I need to do more tomorrow.

As it was, stuck at my desk, I felt odd and alone. I managed to get through the day, then hit yoga, which was good for me. Hard, but good. However, by the time I got home, Kyle was done for the day and I was cooking a Sun Basket alone and watching a little Netflix.

Then, of course, because no one is here with me, I worked a bit. In fact, I went over the presentation I need to give tomorrow and practiced at 9:00pm.

Balance for me is a hard day like today, and likely tomorrow, and then a short day Thursday with volleyball practice.

Three Suits

I have tried hard to be who I am and dress the way I want. I am glad that I can wear shorts and tshirts, or whatever, for work on most days. It’s been years since I had to wear a suit for any purpose, and rarely worn ties. Actually, just a few funerals have required ties.

However, a couple years ago I had to rent a tuxedo. I was giving the awards at our company party, and so I rented a tux. My wife came with me and it wasn’t too bad, although I definitely wasn’t super comfortable.

Fast forward a year, and they invited me back. I had to do it again, and it was fine, though I ditched the jacket as soon as I could.

IMG_3417

Last month, I had to go to a wedding. It was a friend of Tia’s, and I’ve known about this for almost a year. I needed to fit in, and rented a suit. It went fine, though the ladies at Men’s Warehouse kept trying to get me to decide what was better, a or b, for various items. I could care less, and got them to decide. Things turned out well.

IMG_3792

Now it’s time again. A friend of Tia invited us to a charity event tomorrow and I had to get another suit. I called and had them just rent me the same thing this week. I went today and the jacket was a touch large. They’d warned me about that last month and I forgot, so they ordered a new one. We’ll see what it’s like when it comes, but either way, I’ll be wearing my third suit in less than a year.

Not a habit I’d like to continue.
