Solar Power – Plastic Efficiency

Some researchers are reporting that they have polymer solar cells that are converting solar power at about 6.1% efficiency. They need to get to 10% to get marketable, but they’re not there yet. Silicon cells are closer to 15%.

However plastic should be cheaper to manufacture. And should be able to be shaped and put into many different shapes.

As with anything, cost is a big issue, but I’d be curious to know if you could combine something like this with a liquid (water or similar fluid) to get heat and power from the same panels. I know I’d be interested in that.
