The Little Reader

This morning Delaney was exhausted. He came in asking if school was cancelled for some reason, then lay down upset when it wasn’t. Strange, but then Tia talked to him and said he’d been up reading last night.

That kid.

On one hand it’s frustrating, on the other it’s cool, and on the third Martian hand, he has to pay the price for his actions.

He’s been up reading late a few times, and I thought that was pretty cool. Definitely a problem I think is a good one with kids. We had it some times with Kyle, and he’s stopped complaining. If he’s up late reading, he knows he’ll be tired. Delaney is getting there, I hope. And we’re hoping Kendall will develop this problem as well.

I had some extra money from our bank card. We get points and can use them for some things and when I saw a sale at Barnes and Noble, I ordered season 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 2 for my running. It wasn’t as much as I thought it would be, so I asked Delaney if he wanted anything. He’s been reading the Pendragon series, even trying to get in a few pages as we drive from the house to karate. He’s been checking books out from the library at school, but said that #5, the next one, was already gone that week.

So I ordered him Black Water (Pendragon #5) and The Rivers of Zadaa (#6). Then I was thinking about it, and I had a bit more money, so I got The Quillan Games (#7), The Pilgrims of Rayne (#8), and Raven Rise (#9).

All last weekend Delaney was asking if they had arrived while he was camping, and then asking when they’d come. They finally showed up Monday while he was at school and he dug in eagerly.

Monday night I was putting him to bed, he was reading, and at 10:30, I took the book away from him literally. He woke me up Tues morning, asking where the book was at 6am.

Yesterday, Thur morning, we were going to school and he pulled out the book to read on the 2 mile, 4 minute drive to school. I noticed the cover looked different and asked him. It was book 6. Between Mon afternoon and Wed night he’d finished book 5. All 448 pages of it.

Pretty cool.
