Term Limits
I'll admit that I'm torn on term limits. On one hand they limit the amount of power that a person gets in a position. We don’t get people serving in Congress for 40 years, getting comfortable and just accumulating funds every election that they eventually get, or can prevent change with another candidate. We don’t have politicians that are bought by an industry or company and always shower them with gifts.
However, I also know there is something to learning how politics and government work. If limits are too short, say one term, we don’t get experience and balance. We also potentially have companies that can buy a person for less because the person will want to get as much as they can in the few terms they have, so they’ll accept gifts and bribes contributions from lobbyists.
On balance, I would like to see:
President – 2 consecutive terms, 3 lifetime
Senator – 2 consecutive terms, 3 lifetime
House – 4 consecutive terms, 6 lifetime
Supreme Court – 20-25 years, 1 term
State Governor – No consecutive terms, 3 lifetime. Obviously this needs to vary by state, but that’s what I’d like.
State Rep – same as Federal Congress.

The Botanical Gardens
Yesterday we wanted to have a family day, at least part of the day. Tia had to work in the morning, and Kendall had to feed, plus Delaney and I needed to work on the electric fence. Plus, Kyle and I were up early for morning yoga at the pool.
That was neat. I took Kyle as a guest, and this was the first time I’d done outdoor yoga. It was interesting, and fun. Hard to hear, so I learned I need to be near the left side of class to hear better. I also learned that the footing is much different and I need to be cognizant of where my mat sits. However, a good workout and nice time with Kyle in the am.
The afternoon plan changed a bit. We talked about the Incline, but Kendall wasn’t up. We though a museum, but then Kyle asked if we would try the Botanical Gardens, which are near his house. Everyone agreed, and even though it was hot, we had fun. The sky was beautiful.
It’s a surprisingly big area set in the middle of Denver, just adjacent to Cheeseman Park.
We saw some really interesting plants and learned a bit about our world.
Art is placed around the various gardens, and even overgrown in places. Not here, but other places.
There are some indoor and outdoor areas, here’s the wishing well inside, showcasing some tropical plans.
Overall, it’s not something I’d have chosen, or even thought I’d enjoy, but it was nice. Peaceful, a chance to think differently and get away from the busy world, busy life, technology, and more.
A good afternoon, topped off with a quick tour of Kyle’s house, meeting his roommate, and grabbing Voodoo doughnuts (which I avoided).

No Power
Last night there was quite a thunderstorm. In fact, I had dropped Kendall off at high school for volleyball and gone to Starbucks to work. I was listening to the radio, and the DJs in the tech center said there was a huge storm. Black clouds, people turning on lights at 5:30, and thunder.
I packed up and headed back, since the last time a big storm came, there was a tornado warning and school closed. The storm wasn’t in Elizabeth, and no tornado warnings, but it was coming. As I parked, Delaney texted. We were without power. I tried to talk him through starting the generator as we have a sticky butterfly valve, but he couldn’t start it.
When we got home, I got it started right away, and then showed everyone how to start it this morning. However we were without power for 3-4 hours last night. I got the generator started, but had to cook in the dark. This is me using a flashlight to make pasta.
Apparently when we wired up the generator and picked circuits, the kitchen lights weren’t included. Neither was the stove or microwave, but since we cook with gas, a lighter solved the issue. With only ten circuits, we had to make choices, and this worked, though it’s annoying. I need to keep an extension cord around to get power from our office into the kitchen.
While I cooked, Delaney said good bye to high school Here he is, burning all his notes from this year. I think this was cathartic for him.
He snagged a hat from Kyle’s old car before we donated it, and I think he looks great.
The kids and I ate under candlelight, and about the time we finished, power came back on.
